Heystaks Clicking with Mobile Apps

Social Search Start-up Wins Irish Leg of Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2011 Competition for its iPhone and Android Apps

Jonathan Dillon, HeystaksRepresenting the top entered mobile products recently developed in Ireland, Irish social web-search start-up, HeyStaks, has beaten Apptivate, Plendi, Twitter TopUp by Fonoro and WINIcabs at the Irish leg of the Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2011, the competition to identify and develop the best, most innovative, mobile internet start-up companies. Heystaks now have the honour of representing Ireland at the finals taking place at the PICNIC festival in Amsterdam on 15 and 16 September.

Vodafone Mobile Clicks is a Vodafone initiative designed to accelerate innovation in the mobile internet sector across Europe. This year the competition, which has a €225,000 prize fund, was open to start-up companies in Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom that have a mobile site, service or application.

The Irish judging panel, that included Pat Phelan, Director of Product & Innovation at Cubic Telecom; Prof. Desmond Fitzgerald, V.P. for Research at UCD; Rudy de Waele, founder of Mobile 2.0 Europe and dotopen; Peter Barry, Head of VC and Start-up at Vodafone Ventures; Paul Jozefak, Managing Partner at Mobile VC; Reshma Sohonj, Partner at Seedcamp; and Lee Epting, Director of Content Services at Vodafone Group, evaluated the finalists on criteria such as originality; creativity and innovation; technical and operational feasibility; economic and financial viability; value to end-users; and the quality of the management team.

HeyStaks launched their social web search service earlier this year. It enables users to collaborate anonymously with friends and people of like minded interest as they search, to get better, more relevant results recommended by people they trust around topics that matter to them. HeyStaks works with individuals' favourite search engines (Google, Yahoo!, Bing etc) so they can continue searching as normal. HeyStaks also allows consumers to enjoy an original mobile search experience for phones and tablets and enables search synchronisation across multiple devices (computer, phone, tablet, TV).

Talking to IrishDev.com this morning, Jonathan Dillon, Heystaks CEO and former Vice-President of Corporate Development of Yahoo!, said: "We are delighted to have won Vodafone's Irish competition, from among a strong field of Irish innovators, and we are excited to participate in the finals in Amsterdam. Winning the Irish finals is a great sign of approval for our current iphone and android phone apps, which bring 1-stop search to people on their phones, the first time this has ever been done."

1-stop search presents the user with search engine results and also the best of the community's results, all in the same interface.  It also gets users to the content they want faster, which is especially important on small devices where re-doing a query can be a frustrating.

Dillon added: "This is great timing for us as we are seeing very positive consumer reaction to our iPhone and Android phone apps, and getting a telco of the caliber of Vodafone to support this innovative new product is a welcome complement to what our users have been saying. We will be releasing our new apps for iPads and Android tablets in September. These products represent a new and original approach to mobile search, and enables consumers to fulfil all of their search needs in one place, faster, and more accurately via the HeyStaks apps. And for those carrying multiple devices, this is a really easy way for one to sync their searches across devices.

I am very happy for my team in dublin who have been working hard over the past few months on our iphone and android apps, and are now working on some very innovative tablet app products, and  we are looking forward to the finals of the competition to see if we can bring it over the line."

The overall winner will receive €150,000, the runner-up €50,000 and the third placed company €25,000.
